Part 1 – The Love of God

I believe when you begin to understand the love that God has for you that it will be a life changing revelation. It will be liberating and empowering. It will bring joy, peace and hope. When you can truly grasp the love of God, understand the depth of it and the lack of limitations or conditions tied to it, you will realize that it does not have to be earned. It cannot be lost and it is not reserved for “good” people.

Romans 8: 38-39 says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Love is one of the most powerful words in the human vocabulary. Webster says, “Love is affection – strong liking – deep emotion.” Love is one of God’s most amazing attributes but love is also God’s very nature.

It is who He is. 1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.” Ephesians 5:2 (the Message) says, “Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love.”

Let’s look at a few things about God’s Love:

1. His love doesn’t change
Hebrews13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Do you know why some of you have such a difficult time believing and understanding the love of God? Because you have encountered “wishy washy” people who say they love you but at some point decide those emotions have changed. God forbid but maybe it was a parent…a Dad who abandoned you and the message that sent was “he doesn’t love me anymore.”
Maybe a spouse left you – after speaking the vows and making a commitment “for better for worse” – he hit the road and even told you that he doesn’t love you anymore.
Sadly, we compare God’s love to what we have experienced from humans and because of that, we underestimate and cheapen God’s love. Don’t compare it! God’s love is supernatural, it does not change! He loves you no matter what and He will never “unlove” you!

2. God doesn’t have any favorites
Deuteronomy 7:7-8 says, 7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you ”

God is not impressed by the wealthy, the powerful, the popular, the talented, the religious, the “good,” etc…God’s love is freely given to ALL. He does not love the faithful missionary any more than He loves the drunk who spends every dime he has on beer and never sets foot in a church. That is a hard concept for us to grasp as humans. Success and accomplishment is so impressive in our society that we are guilty of attaching it to affection. That is not the process by which God gives His love. His love is poured out on the “lowest of the low” (according to human standards) to the “cream of the crop.”

Come back tomorrow for part 2 as we take another look at “The Love of God”
