Choose Your Side

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is that of Joshua and the children of Israel crossing over the Jordan and conquering the Promise Land. There’s no question that Canaan was God’s appointed land for His people. It was God’s perfect will that all the tribes be in the land flowing with milk and honey. Anything short of Canaan was settling for less than God’s very best.

Why is it that so many of us do not experience God’s best? That supernatural victory, that Promise Land that is ours fot the claiming. So many times, we stop just short of all that God has for us. In Joshua, chapter 22, the 2 1/2 tribes of Rueben, Gad and the 1/2 ¬†tribe of Manasseh settled for less and stopped short of the Promise Land. They settled on the East side of the Jordan. They were “borderline believers.”

When we read the story, we discover an amazing truth that has profound but practical application for our lives today. Will you live on the edge? Will you live too close to the enemy? When you straddle the fence, it is difficult to tell what side or whose side you are on. When you live your life trying to be politically correct, socially accepted or have the intention of not offending anyone…when you live close to the enemy, it is hard to figure out what you believe or even If you believe.

I am not referring to legalism or an obnoxious mean spirited person or those with a Pharisee type attitude who wear a badge of holiness and stick their noses up at everyone. I am talking about an undivided heart. Do you remember the story of Lot? He positioned himself too close to the enemy and disaster took place. His heart was divided.

I love a song that the Christian group, Newsong recorded about ten years ago…”Wholehearted” is the song where the lyrics refer to the frustration of trying to live in “two worlds at one time.” Finally the declaration is made to live for God with a whole heart. No more straddling the fence – making a choice of who to serve and how to live.

I challenge you today to get off the fence and stop straddling it. Choose your side…choose Jesus!
