The Dream Trip

I am the worst person in the world about keeping surprises. 9 times out of 10, I end up telling my wife in early December what gifts I got her for Christmas. I plead with her to let me tell her!

A few months ago, I received an email confirmation for a big surprise I had been planning. Yes…I ended up spilling the beans and telling my wife that I had arranged her dream trip to Rome, Italy for our 30th anniversary and her 50th birthday. (Actually, it is for every special event for the next 10 years! haha)

We just returned from our trip to Italy. We were also able to travel to Greece and Turkey. It was absolutely the greatest trip ever!

I love history so to see tons of old buildings and learn the history of so many different events that took place thousands of years ago in those very spots was mind blowing.

Rome is very unique in that you have a 3000 year old building on one corner and across the street is a cool, contemporary building that was built in recent days. Old and new – it was a gorgeous combination!

I cannot even tell you how excited I was to visit the places where the Apostle Paul had been. To walk the streets of Ephesus and see the theater where he preached…to know that he walked those very streets..wow!

I celebrated my 28th spiritual birthday on this trip and it just happened to be the day that we were touring the massive Coliseum in Rome where many Christians were martyred for their faith. Right down the street was a run down little building – Mamertine Prison where Peter and Paul were both held. Paul lost his head and died in a little room where I stood. It was unreal!

Of course, the special time with the love of my life is something I will never forget. We talked, laughed, reminisced and shared about our future. We sailed down the water “streets” in Venice, ate pasta and pizza at a little cafe in Sicily, swam in the sea in Greece, resisted a very aggressive rug dealer in Turkey and walked the streets of Rome taking in the gorgeous sights. These and many other incredible memories with the woman that I love.

I realize how blessed we were to have such an opportunity. I am grateful to God for allowing us to live this dream and to make such special memories.

Pizza will never be the same!
