A Healthy, Growing Relationship

The number one priority of the Christian life is spending time with Jesus Christ.  It is vital for a healthy, growing relationship.

I want to encourage you to make your quiet time, your devotional life, the priority in your life.  It is not only the most important thing that you do, but it is vital for your spiritual growth and health as a Christian. I challenge you to be intimate with God. It will change your life!

Let me give you some practical things to do to get yourself ready…

First of all, I encourage you to have a time of preparation. Practically, that means you need to be physically and mentally alert. Some of you are morning people but others are “night owls.” I prefer morning, I am alert, fresh, and my mind is ready so I always have my quiet time first thing in the morning. My wife Vickie is the opposite, she prefers night time. She stays up until 1:00 or 2:00 am and feels that she is at her ‘best’ at night so for her to have her quiet time in the morning would not work well. Determine what time is best for you and make sure that you are physically and mentally alert.

Next I advise you to select a time and a location and keep that consistent. For instance, if it is at 6:00 am in the morning, then try to keep it around 6 am daily. If it is in the afternoon, keep it in the afternoon. Keep that specific time and then focus on finding a specific location.

I have a chair that I have had for many years that is in the sitting area of my bedroom. I use that chair every single day. I read, pray and worship in that chair every day. Even as I write this, I think of that chair and I know how it feels and even what it smells like as I kneel  there every day.

Finally, I would encourage you to have the proper tools to enhance your experience…

Your bible, some great worship music, a journal, a pen and tablet to take notes and a devotional to use daily.

As I shared on Wednesday’s blog, we have a beautiful leather bound daily devotional book available for purchase right now at New Season for $15.00. (They can also be purchased at Lifeway Christian Bookstores for $25.00) I was blessed to be a contributing author, along with Dr. Johnny Hunt and many other Pastors. This devotional will be a great resource as you study and seek to have a thriving relationship with God.

We will be selecting three people who commented on today or Wednesday’s blog, posted on Facebook or Tweeted to each receive a free copy of the Devotional book.

  1. This is an AWESOME Blog! As you know prayer and meditation time has been a part of my life for a number of years. (even longer than the time that I have been rededicated to Christ). My time with God in the mornings is precious and I can tell if I miss it some days. Of course with work, family, a 5 year old and another little one on the way, it is not always the same time each day, but it is EVERY DAY. I read from the Bible, a devotional, and constantly listen (and sing like no one is listening) to my worship music all day at work and in my truck! One thing extra I might mention was that a long time ago a mentor of mine told me that prayer was talking to God; meditation was me listening to what God has to say to me. I try to make sure I take time to have both!!! As always, you are right on top of it and I thank GOD he placed you in my path for this journey! We miss you guys INCREDIBLY!

  2. I started this about a year ago. HUGE difference in my life. Things have been moving in the right direction since. I’m addicted to my time with Jesus. I cannot even imagine not doing this. I have missed a couple of times – as all of us do – and those days have been much more empty and lonely – even tho I know he’s there – I didnt get connected.
