Safe and Predictable

In the book of Numbers, chapter 13, we read a story of 13 men being sent out as spies into the land flowing with milk and honey…the Promise Land. The land that God had already promised to His people.

We see in this passage in Numbers where these men are instructed to go and we are given each man’s name and what tribe they are from. Talk about accountability! Talk about your name on the dotted line! Everyone knew what these men were getting ready to do.

So, off they went to check out the land. Two of the men came back to give a great report. These two men were full of faith; they were excited at the possibility of a better day and a better life. But just in many cases, the general consensus from the majority of the men that were sent out was that they did not have the faith to possess what God had already given them.

D.L. Moody said, “God never made a promise that was too good to be true, however every promise must be claimed by faith.”

The people stayed in the wilderness for 40 years, roaming about aimlessly and missing out on all that God had for them. No decision was made to move forward and possess the land because the 10 spies had the same problem that most people have..perhaps today, you find yourself “stuck” and facing these same issues:

1. They forget the past
Exodus 1:14 says, “And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage—in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.”

Do you want to live the same way you’ve always lived? Do you want to be stuck in the past living a life that God never intended for you to live?

2. They were settled with the present
They were comfortable and they were satisfied with status quo. They asked Moses, “why can’t we just stay here in the wilderness”? Isn’t that where most people are? The average person would choose to stay where it is comfortable , safe and predictable instead of finding out what God has for you on the other side!

3. They feared the future
They didn’t want to step out and take the risk. The 10 spies saw pitfalls and problems. Joshua and Caleb were the 2 spies who had faith – they saw potential and promise. Some people see giants but others see how big God is.

There is no need to be afraid of the future, Jesus has already gone there and He is waiting on you! You can live your life safely and predictable, or you can step out and embrace the life God has for you.
