Four “Must Haves” of Leadership

Leadership Requires Vision:

Leaders have a strong sense of purpose and mission. They know what’s important. They have a clearly defined vision.

Leaders know who they are, why they are here, and what they are going to do with the only life they have to live.

Their vision encompasses personal integrity and family priorities. Their vision affects and empowers others and allows them to be the best they can be. Leaders live out their vision, not just dream about it. Leadership requires vision.

Leadership Requires Prioritization:

If you’re going to lead, you must set clearly defined priorities and focus on what really matters. Leaders separate what must be done from what should be done. What is absolutely essential, not just what’s important.

You will never win trying to do everything. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life and in the churches I have pastored,  is doing many things good, but only few things great.

We must leave the buffet of lots of things and concentrate on the steak. Stephen Covey said “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”

Leadership Requires Continual Improvement:

People who lead must consistently improve continuously. Little by little, day by day, you must be making improvements. People don’t get better by accident. Everyday, you must work on your craft, your business, and your life. You really don’t need to compete with anyone else except yourself. If you are getting better everyday, then you are growing and leaders grow.

Leadership Requires Humility:

It’s so easy to get prideful when you’re in leadership. We all get pumped up and sometimes, full of ourselves when we lead.

True leaders realize they didn’t get there on their own. If you see a turtle on a fence post, you know that someone put it there. If you have experienced any type of success, there is no doubt that someone helped you get there.

Walk in humility and have an attitude of gratitude. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. There is only one thing worse than a sore loser and that is a bad winner.

Which one of these essentials comes easy to you and why?

Which one do you struggle with? I would love to hear from you.
