Paradigm Shift

Albert Einstein said, “no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”

Today we would say we need a different approach or a paradigm shift. A paradigm is a set of assumptions, concepts or ideas which we look at something.

We all have problems. All of us can make a list right now of all the things we need to change or projects we think of that seem impossible to complete.

Right now in my world, I am understaffed, under resourced and have a major project (connecting to our County Sewer System) that has produced one roadblock after another. Every time we turn around, there is something or someone that is impeding progress.

Have you ever been involved in a situation that should have gone off without a hitch but then everything went wrong?

Have you had to face setback after setback, trial after trial, frustration after frustration? I bet you have! Here is what I have tried to do in the last couple of days:

  • Figure out your part of the problem

Where did you go wrong? What assumptions did you make that were wrong? Where did the communication break down? You first must own up to your part in the problem.

  • Re-think how to fix it

This takes time and a pen and piece of paper. This is where most people miss it… taking the time to re-think, to evaluate, to look at it from a different perspective, and to brainstorm “what if” scenarios. To really engage in the art of rethinking the way you previously thought about it will create a new fresh approach to problem solving.

  • How can everyone involved win

So many times you’re dealing with selfish people. Sometimes you are the selfish one. How can everyone involved get what they want and the project be completed? How does everyone win? When someone feels that they are losing in the deal or being taken advantage of negotiation stops.

Conventional wisdom would argue these three points but I have discovered that when we own up to our part of the problem, really take time to re-think the situation and make sure that everybody wins, then we will create a synergy and the paradigm shift will take place.

Do you need a paradigm shift?
