Genesis, chapter 9,verses 11-17, says:
“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
In Genesis, chapter 9 we have the first covenant mentioned in the Bible. A covenant binds two parties together in a relationship. Different covenants have different signs or symbols linked to them.
Circumcision is the sign of the covenant with Abraham; the sabbath is the sign of the covenant with Israel. In Genesis 9 God designed a sign in the rainbow. Its presence in the sky is a visible reminder of God’s everlasting covenant that He will never again destroy the earth by a flood. So when you see a rainbow, you see the promise of God. You see a new beginning, a new horizon.
Let me ask you a question – do you find yourself looking at the rainbow or focusing more on the storm? Do you focus on the problem or the solution? Are you consumed with the negative or the positive in your life? Be a builder not a destroyer! Be an encourager, not a detractor. Be that person who sees the rainbow and stop focusing on the storm.
So today, if you are frozen by fear as you stare at the storm, rather than gazing at the beauty and hope found in the rainbow, let me remind you of a few things about God:
He is FAITHFUL – He always comes through
He is SOVEREIGN – He reigns over everyone and everything
He is BIGGER – than your biggest problem or your biggest failure
He is STRONGER – than your most threatening and ferocious critic
He is HOLY– perfect, above all
He is in LOVE– with you!
So get your eyes off of the storm and start looking at the promise found in the rainbow!
